LAE City Dwellers edged Besta United 2-1 and secured a place in the National Soccer League grand final, thanks to an extra-time goal by Raymond Gunemba.
Besta United dominated of field position and possession, but, poor execution came back to haunt them as they failed to block out Gunemba’s double.
Despite a struggling performance against PNG’s development team, Gunemba found the back of the net in the first half, giving his side a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Although the score line was in favour of the defending champions, Besta fought hard to equalise just before full time pushing the game into extra time.
The PNG Academy side failed to convert their opportunities and it cost them when Gunemba scored his second and the match winner, making it a total of 16 goals this season to his name.
Lae City is now on standby for the grand final awaiting the winner of the other semifinal match between Madang and PS United
The Madang-PS United match was rescheduled when PS United failed to turn up for the game because of a flight booking.
The National was told by NSL officials that the flight issue came about because of the change of venue from Lae to Madang due to wet weather conditions in Lae.
Despite the setbacks the NSL board will now decide on another date sometime this week for the semi-final.
Madang assistant coach Amos Romo said they prepared well for the game but due to the complications, they agreed with the deferral and now looked forward to a decision on where and when the match would be played.
“We know it was beyond our control and we’ve agreed with the deferral,”Romo said.
