Lae city gets K1.5m fire truck

A Fire truck worth K1.5 million was commissioned yesterday in Lae, bringing the total number of trucks in the city to three.
Chief fire officer (CFO) Bill Roo said Lae was expanding with development that demanded the need for the truck.
“With the type of fires in Lae over the last three years, it has put a demand on the office of the CFO to re-fleet and re-equip Lae Fire Station and some fire stations around the country,” Roo said.
“Because of expanding development, I have initiated that we have an extra one or two fire stations.
“The project developing unit of the PNG Fire Service is formulating documentations to submit to National Planning for funding of the new stations.”
Roo said the new truck carried 9,000 litres of water, three to four times more than the current trucks Lae was using.
Station commander Supt Bal Kena said the inclusion of the third fire truck to Lae Fire Station’s fleet was a relief as the city was developing at a rate that surpassed its fire-fighting capacity.
He said the city’s only fire station was meeting the demand of Urban Nawaeb, Huon Urban and Lae city.
