A NEW fire truck is expected to arrive in Lae this week to boost its operations, says Chief Fire Officer Bill Roo.
The fire truck is one of nine heavy duty fire trucks donated by the government of China for the Apec leaders’ summit in November.
Roo said with the need to refleet and replace the old fire trucks around the country, the nine trucks were allocated to selected fire stations within Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Goroka, Madang and Rabaul.
“The Papua New Guinea Fire Service would like to thank the Morobe government for assisting in paying for the shipment of the fire truck from Port Moresby at a cost of K17,500.
“The fire service needs the support of provincial governments to help support its operations and such cooperation and cost sharing is vital in assisting the fire service carry out its operations effectively in outside centres,” Roo
said.
The Eastern Highlands and Western Highlands governments too had come on board to meet the shipping cost for their respective provinces.
China-donated fire trucks are heavy duty and can carry 9,000 litres of water and 3,000 litres of foam.
