LAE FC bounced back from the 4-0 drubbing by Morobe last week to post their first win of their fledgling Telikom National Soccer League career with a 2-1 defeat of young guns Besta PNG United on Saturday.

In Port Moresby continuous rain from early morning and throughout the day saw both matches at Bisini soccer grounds called off.

Hekari, who would have loved to have gotten their season off to a winning start with a win against newcomers Admiralty will have to wait another week to  have a chance of notching a win. Stars and Oro was the other match that did not eventuate.

The Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae saw a rejuvenated Lae  side hold off the team made up of the best Under-23 talent in the country in an evenly fought encounter. Besta drew first in the opening minutes of the first half when Tommy Sammy found the net in the 13th minute.

The match picked up in intensity as both sets of mid-fielders battled to provide opportunities for their front men.

Lae’s Isaac Lalo slotted a penalty past Besta goalkeeper Benjamin Wilbert to draw even.

Light rain then made conditions challenging and neither side could gain an edge until the 36th minute when Lae’s Moses Kamakeng to put his team in front 2-1.

The second half was a dour affair as both sides struggled for ascendency. The win sees Lae join Morobe on top of the ladder.

Lae 2 (I Lalo 27, M Kamakeng 36) Besta United 1 (T Sammy 13) at Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium, Lae. HT: 2-1 (Lae).
