THE Lae Golf Club last Thursday staged an inaugural event in honour of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare that will become an annual event in the club’s calendar.
The event called the Somare Cup was won by Team Papua New Guinea against Team International.
Club manager David Joyce told The National that he wanted to do something that would include the PNG community and the international community to honour and remember the passing of the country’s first prime minister and his work in bringing the country to independence.
Joyce said the event was similar to the president’s cup which was in their calendar.
“We actually started this in April but because of the Coronavirus we have extended it,” Joyce said.
“The committee and all the captains got behind it because we don’t have anything where we all do something together. We play on Saturday and then everyone goes home.
“I though it’s a good opportunity for the expatriate community to understand little bit more about PNG culture and its people but it’s also good opportunity to get different group of people playing together which is I really wanted because this club has 520 members and it’s important that we all work together to grow this community as a golf club, so that’s why I come up with the concept,” he said.
Joyce that the club was a big community of people to run into to do things together that was why he wanted to do something to bring both communities, the expatriates and the local community together and enjoy something in honour of such an amazing man.
