LAE has continued to experience an increase in the number of court cases registered in the district court every year, Chief Magistrate Nerrie Eliakim says.
She said Lae had more than 7000 cases between 2014 and 2015, and the number had climbed in the following years.
“Last year alone there were about 8000 cases registered and of those, 70 per cent were criminal cases,” Eliakim said. She said the number of criminal cases reported in the district court was decreasing comparing the years 2015 (5675 cases),  2016 (5297) and Jan-June 2017 (2023) .
“I am confident that with the ongoing partnerships with the community and stakeholders would see a further reduction in the number of criminal cases brought before the courts by December,” she said.
