MOMASE Karate Association will host the 18th National Karate Championships in Lae, Morobe province, this weekend.
More than 10 karate clubs including NCD and Manus, with an estimated 150 exponents will showcase their karate skills in the tournament.
According to the host organising coordinator Sensei John Watah, the code has dropped over the last five years and this tournament would be an eye opener to revive the code.
He said Lae, as the host, would have 10 clubs fighting with more than 100 fighters who would converge at the Bumbu Police Barracks gymnasium for the two-day event.
It would be divided into 10 weight categories and two style contacts.
The weight groups would range from 55kg to 80kg and for the first time, U12 and U16 and women categories, have been included.
Sensei Watah said the full contact would be held in honour of the late Sensei Fonte Seming, who introduced the code in the country.
“He was one of the leading fighters to introduce the code and went on to become the national president and coach,” he said.
