Lae Hunters game praised

Letters

LAST weekend’s staging of the Hunters v North Devils game in Lae is to be commended.
I am not saying this because the Hunters won but because of the fact that the Lae rugby league ground was not enough to accommodate all the fans who wanted to get in showed the strength of the following rugby league has in this country.
Many could not get in because it was too expensive and because the ground was full.
Convoys of vehicles with die-hard supporters from the Highlands region to rainy Lae showed the kind of interest followers of the game had.
The gate fees collected, compared to what is normally collected in the Port Moresby fixtures for the Queensland Intrust Cup, is a yardstick that should encourage the organisers to take more matches out of Port Moresby into other centres.
Taking matches to other centres also helps to develop the sport. To the Lae organisers, job well done.
