THE Lae district joint planning and budget priority committee has responded to the cries of buyers and sellers at Lae’s main market for better facilities by allocating K140,000 for a facelift.

The money was paid to construction company Timkumba Holdings Limited, which began construction work at the market’s main trading building last Monday.

The project is managed by the Lae City Council on behalf of the district.

Council property officer Peter Saigome, who is overseeing the project, said the renovation was commissioned after concerns were raised by market users of the ailing condition of the main shelter.

“This building has been standing here since the 1950s. No maintenance has been done till now,” Saigome said.

“The funding for this building came from the Lae district under its market improvement programme,” he said.

Saigome said the building was expected to be completed in six weeks.
