WARD five councillor and Lae Urban local-level government deputy lord mayor Jacob Maragau has praised Tent City back-to-school soccer tournament organisers and soccer players for their efforts in their “Stop School Fights” campaign.
He said he was happy that the tournament was held in ward five, bringing amateurs and representative players together to promote unity through soccer.
“I thank you for taking time to come and compete in the tournament,” Maragau said.
“I appreciate that you are bringing football to my ward.
“Regarding the ‘Stop School Fights’ awareness, I must say that among all our schools, Bumayong Secondary is at the top of the list in terms of school fights.
“School fights are like a new curriculum at Bumayong, the way I see it in the mornings and afternoons.
“I don’t know how we’ll fix this issue as police have been in and out of the institution, but they can’t solve it.
“As the councillor, I offered to help but my advice wasn’t heeded.
“But I think this initiative provides a way forward for a solution.”
Maragau said as long as he was the councillor, he would continue to support the awareness.
He appealed to parents in Lae to also join the campaign in a bid to unite schools and communities in the Morobe capital.
