Lae police on high alert

MOROBE police have been put on high alert after complaints by the public about the movement of guns into the province in coffins.
Provincial police commander Supt Jacob Singura said his office had received the complaints but had yet to verify them.
“At the moment, the police do not have any evidence to verify this claims but we will still be on high alert to monitor and check,” he said.
Singura urged anyone who had information or evidence to substantiate the claims to assist police in order to protect the communities and the province.
“If you are one of those doing this, just stop before the law gets a hold of you,” he said.
He said this after allegations that coffins carrying bodies and being transported into the province were actually carrying firearms.
Morobe rural commander Chief Inspector John Daviaga agreed that all law enforcement personnel had to be on high alert for the possible smuggling of firearms into the province.
He appealed to communities to help police by reporting such situations where guns were being transported into the province.
He said police in Gagidu, Finschhafen, would be directed to monitor passenger boats.
