Lae police thuggery

Letters

This letter is directed at the police in Lae and what I regard as their unlawful actions towards the general public.
I had parked opposite 9-Mile market, which is central, ideal and where people go to.
I saw a grey police car loaded with officers stop opposite me and three men in uniform jumped out and aggressively grabbed a young boy who they suspected of doing street selling.
Without asking any questions, they took from him three packets of Cambridge cigarettes worth K23 each, a heap of betel nuts worth K65 and about K120 and other stuff from his pockets and string bag.
What I saw is not right. Why do people who work for a government organisation treat native people like that?
There are unlicensed businesses owned by foreigners operating illegally, we have criminals around and illegal activities taking place and those policemen should be looking into those.
It is heart-breaking to see our simple hard-working youths treated like that.
