Lae residents mourn Sir Michael’s passing

Letters

EVEN in death, Papua New Guinea’s founding father Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare has again united communities, now, in Lae.
Seeing the slow progress by the Morobe government in announcing a provincial programme, concerned residents of Lae took up the initiative of setting up a community haus krai.
A small group met last Thursday to organise a community programme and liaised with the provincial haus krai committee and Lae city authority on behalf of the residents.
We were successful to secure Raun Wara as our venue to honour Sir Michael.
It was sad to see Morobe missing out on the first week of mourning when our founding father had deep ties with the province.
This sorrow is the uniting factor which brought communities in Lae, particularly the youths, who volunteered to clean up and set up the haus krai venue. The haus krai programme is mostly focused on educating school children.
We aim to give late Sir Michael a proper farewell the Morobean way.
We are adhering to the Covid-19 safety measures.
