LAE district spent K1.2 million to repair potholes at the base of Kamkumung and Bumbu bridges respectively, according to MP John Rosso.
This included the road section and potholes at Tusa Medical Centre turn-off, which is the responsibility of the Department of Works.
Rosso, in partnership with Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu and the Lae City Authority, used available funds on roads that needed urgent maintenance work.
Kamkumung Bridge, which was closed for three weeks with traffic through Butibam village, reopened yesterday.
“We cannot sit down doing nothing while expecting Government, or in this case the Department of Works, to come and do it for us,” he said.
District chief executive officer Robin Calistus and Rosso’s first-secretary Neil Ellery cut the ribbon to open the bridge.
Calistus said JV PNG Investment Constructions Ltd had performed extremely well in the construction of both Kamkumung and Bumbu bridges, and along the turn-off of Huon Road and Coronation Drive.
The company also repaired the side rails of the bridges.
Calistus said several other roads in the city had deteriorated and needed repairs.
Ellery thanked Saonu for his support.
