Lae sweep bowls’ triples honours

LAE women’s bowlers made a clean sweep of the National Women’s Triples Lawn Bowls Championships in Lae last weekend.
The women from the host association snatched the top three spots while Mt Hagen took out fourth place.
The tournament, sanctioned by Bowls PNG, attracted five centres — Defence (Port Moresby), Mt Hagen, Goroka, Bulolo and host association Lae. For the third place playoff, Lae’s team of Rose O’Regan, Serah Bazo and Jane Wangon were too strong for Hagen’s Pauline Peter, Bogla Tali and Pauline Iamura, winning the match by five shots 19-14.
In the final, Lae’s best women’s bowlers went up against each other to see who would take out the shield and the prize money.
The team of Wendy Bazo (lead), Piwen Karkar (second) and skipper Angela Simbinali had a fair challenge from their fellow Lae counterparts Jenny Takolu (lead), Lynna Boino (second) and Fozi Matang.
The Simbinali-led side regrouped at the second end and did not look back but had a stalemate of 9-9 at the 12th end.
With three ends remaining, the experience of Simbinali was the difference as she steered her team to victory by four shots 13-9.
