Lae technical school offering more courses

ST JOSEPH’S Catholic Technical School in Lae plans to expand and offer more trading courses to students.
Manager Gedisa Kepusu said the school has grown and will continue into the next level of education.
The school under the technical and vocational education training (Tvet) programme is looking forward to grow bigger in terms of offering more trades and skill courses, and expanding its infrastructure.
He said the technical school however had very limited number of classrooms so they took in limited number of students.
Kepusu said they would be increasing number of students due to high demand for skills training and technical knowledge.
The school had last built new classrooms in 2014.
St Joseph’s Technical was started in March 19, 1963, by early Catholic missionaries. The foundation work and construction started in 1960.
The school was also looking at changing old buildings and classrooms which were built in 1960s to suit less than 20 people.
The school currently has 404 students including 24 female students, and 20 teaching staff offering 11 conventional trade courses for one year technical and vocational education training certificate qualification in technical skills and knowledge.
Most of the students are within Morobe, few being selected from Northern, East Sepik, Madang, Bougainville, and East and West New Britain.
There are three non-trade courses of religious education, personal development and business studies.
It was recognised as an educational training institution and started initially by offering only carpentry and joinery course with 20 students.
