POLICE in Lae will provide maximum security next weekend for two major events.
These are the Morobe Agricultural Show and a rugby league international between PNG Kumuls and England Knights.
Acting Lae police commander Fred Kaiwa said yesterday additional manpower had been sought from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force at Igam Barracks. “I have sought approval from the hierarchy at Igam for a manpower of 50 to support 100 police officers,” he said.
“These are big events taking place and police will be on alert to make sure people enjoy without problems.”
The show will be on Oct 27 and 28 while the rugby league game will be on Oct 27. Kaiwa said traffic would be on alert to do vehicle checks, while sector response unit and officers from the provincial command would be patrolling the main highways leading into Lae.
He called on the public to behave during that time.
Kaiwa said there had been instances in the past where there had been trouble at times of such events. Meanwhile, he said the Lae law and order committee members were doing their awareness around the city assisted by police community policing unit.
“Next week these members will carry out awareness in their own areas of residence,” Kaiwa said.
