LAIAGAM received K10,000 from Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas, signalling the start of the district’s first rugby league nines tournament over the weekend.
The Lagaip Nines is an initiative of the Drug Abstinence Rehabilitation Centre (DARC) as part of its engagement with youths to address social issues in the district.
Centre founder and tournament organiser Geno Muspak said the nines was an avenue for youths to showcase their talent while addressing lawlessness in their communities. “The main campaign for DARC’s involvement in the tournament is to help address lawlessness in our community and eradicate fear,” he said.
“We are also certain that this is one of Sir Peter’s vision to see a transformed Enga through sports activities.
“We thank our sponsors for the event through the leadership of Sir Peter.
“We will continue to host the tournament to nurture and identify young, vibrant talents. Sports is one of those avenues DARC will continue to use and partner with our stakeholders to bring peace and justice to our community.
“Nearly or almost everyone is affected when something goes wrong in the community.”
Despite the wet conditions, supporters turned up in numbers at Laiagam Station from surrounding communities to see men and women’s teams battling the group stage.
