Lakatani warns motorists to be vigilant
The National, Friday September 13th, 2013
LAE metropolitan police commander Iven Lakatani has warned motorists in the city to take extra precautions when travelling at night, especially on bad sections of the road.
He said in Lae yesterday that while the number of car thefts had decreased, drivers should still take extra care when travelling through bad stretches of the road.
He said car windows should be wound up in the evenings.
“At nights when the glasses are down and traffic is congested, this could give an opportunity for criminals to strike.
“So always be vigilant,” he said.
Lakatani said police presence had been increased in the city.
“There are units now manning major bus stops in the afternoons,” he said.
Bus stops, especially at Eriku, town and the main market have been trouble spots with petty criminals taking advantage of the large number of public transport users to snatch bags, pick pockets and harass workers on their way home.
“The general public must be responsible and be security conscious when moving around at all times,” he said.
Lakatani warned people to not place themselves at risk.
