Lam quits

ADRIAN Lam, the celebrated Kumul and current national coach, gave himself the chop, resigning from his position yesterday.
Although details of his resignation have yet to be publicised, sources said the former Queensland halfback had decided to step aside after the apparent failure of the national body to begin preparations for the Four Nations tournament next month.
PNG Rugby League chairman Gary  Juffa yesterday confirmed Lam’s withdrawal from national duties but assured the rugby league community that the Kumuls were still “on track” to participate in next month’s tournament.
“Even with Adrian stepping down there are still contingency plans and we will carry on with the Kumuls,” Juffa said.
He said the PNGRFL interim committee under John Numapo would be issuing an official press statement on the matter today.
“I can confirm that Adrian has resigned but will not say anything else until tomorrow (today) when the PNGRFL officially makes an a statement.”
In May, Lam made an emotional plea to the PNGRFL to sort out its internal problems in order for rugby league to progress, and in particular the Kumuls to begin their preparations for the Four Nations.
He said at the time that he would seriously consider stepping down as coach if he felt that PNG rugby league could not solve its leadership issues.
Attempts to get comments from Lam last night were unsuccessful, however, it is understood both the PNGRFL and Lam parted on amicable terms.
