LANDOWNERS in Markham Valley, Morobe have signed a land lease and development agreement with PNG Biomass for work on a renewable energy park.
According to PNG Biomass, the lease would enable site clearing, construction and operation of the renewable energy park.
The development agreement will ensure benefits flow to landowners.
PNG Biomass is operated by the Markham Valley Biomass Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oil Search Ltd.
The park will consist of a 30MW biomass power plant, funded by Oil Search, and an associated 17MW solar farm with battery storage funded by the Australian government and European Union.
PNG Biomass stakeholder engagement manager Jessie Mitir said the project would benefit locals.
“You all are paving the way for sustainable green energy development not only for your own family and community, but also for the province and nation for the next 45 years,” she said.
The signing took place in Lae followed by a ceremony on the Ganef land in Zifasing, Wampar local level government, Huon Gulf. Orogwangin clansman Luke Kifas was happy to witness for the first time an agreement that would bring tangible benefits to his community.

  • What is the purpose of this biomass fund. Is it for Oil Search to gain carbon credit or to help PNG with have alternative bioenergy?
