MAJOR landslides in parts of Southern Highlands are causing many people to go without food, water and shelter.

Kumbianda ward councillor Thomson Yapina said landslides were becoming a common disaster in many parts of the province.

He said this landslide started in the Ialibu–Pangia electorate and was reaching Kagua–Erave.

“We will be suffering because the road that people depend has been completely cut off,” he said.

“I’m calling on Works and Implementation Minister Francis Awesa to send in a team to access the damage and reconstruct the road,” he said.

Yapina called on local MP James Lagea to provide immediate relief assistance and food for the people.

In Ialibu–Pangia, thousands of people have been affected by landslides since last month.

Kagua–Erave was hit by landslides last week.

The people there were reported to be homeless and suffering from lack of food and clean drinking water.
