THE laundry staff at Liamo Reef Resort in Kimbe have come to the rescue of a Melbourne based charity that sent a container load of medical and educational materials to Catholic Health and Education Agencies in Kimbe, West New Britain. The Kimbe Assistance Project, which is a small charity based in the Catholic Parishes of Narre Warren and Berwick in Victoria was formed after pilgrims from the Kimbe Catholic Diocese visited the two parishes in 2008 as part of the World Youth Day celebrations.
Since 2009 the project has sent three containers of educational and medical goods to Kimbe for distribution throughout the province, to both Catholic and Government Agency schools, clinics, the Kimbe General Hospital and Fred Hollows Eye Clinic. Some wet boxes of books and hospital linen were noticed while emptying the last part of the container.Further investigation revealed a hole of about 200 centimetres in a corner of the container. It would appear that someone had dropped another container on to the one sent from Melbourne and this caused a large hole in the roof of the container.A total of 60 boxes of school library and text books had to be destroyed, as well as some valuable medical books that were destined for health clinics and the Kimbe General Hospital. All these books had been collected from school, community and hospital libraries in Melbourne.
The books had all been donated so cost nothing, but their replacement would cost more than K20,000 if they had to be purchased. In addition there were sixty five boxes of donated Hospital Linen.
The Liamo Reef Resort heard about the damage to the donated hospital linen, and offered to launder the linen. The two coordinators of the Project, Barbara and Adrian Corkeronare and   Parish Priest of St. Michael Church Berwick, Fr Peter Slater were very grateful as this linen can now be distributed to the Catholic Health Clinics, the Kimbe General Hospital and the Fred Hollows Eye Clinic without the fear of mould making this linen useless.
