NATIONAL development will only progress if the law and order situation is good, Police Minister Robert Atiyafa says.
He told officers while taking over the office from Nixon Duban yesterday that peace and prosperity would be enjoyed when everyone respected the law.
Atiyafa said he was ready to carry on from where Duban left off.
“In accepting this ministry, I do not wish to make any sweet promises but my commitment is to see that the Government provides improved accommodation for all police officers throughout the country,” Atiyafa said.
Atiyafa said for the last 20 years, the 16 policemen in his Henganofi district, in Eastern Highlands, had been living in run-down houses with no proper water supply.
He said some of the guns used by the officers were 20 years old and useless.
Atiyafa said he wanted to see the image of the force improved. And with the many promising developments going on in this country, he said there was a need to improve police efficiency.
He said Prime Minister Peter O’Neill had allocated about K276 million to support the police modernisation programme.
