A COUNCIL member of the Papua New Guinea Law Society has resigned to become a judge of the National Court and Supreme Court.
Royale Thompson will become a judge at a ceremonial sitting of the Supreme Court this month. She will be joined by another female Teresa Berrigan.
In a luncheon hosted by the Law Society last Friday, president Dr Vergil Narokobi described Royale as “an outstanding member of the council” who was looked upon as a role model for lawyers.
“Since the establishment of the PNG Law Society, the council had the privilege of being served by a number of reputable lawyers with commitment and attitude, illustrating a genuine concern for the society and its members. Royale was one of those lawyers,” Vergil said.
Vergil praised the immense contributions she made during her term as a council member which had a great impact on the work of the Law Society.
She thanked the council members saying being on the council provided the opportunity to make close connections with each other.
She said although they were from different areas of the legal profession, they were able to discuss and agree on many issues that came before them.
“I’m confident the council will grow in its standing and continue to contribute and lead the Law Society,” she said.
