Law students learn skills
The National, Wednesday July 8th, 2015
A GROUP of 95 law students are strengthening their advocacy skills with Australian lawyers in Port Moresby this week.
Members of the Victorian Bar are here to share their skills and experience with the 95 law students in a week-long civil and criminal advocacy programme.
The programme is facilitated by the Legal Training Institute and the Australian Government.
Justice Les Gavara-Nanu spoke to students during the opening ceremony about the importance of acting ethically and with integrity in their work.
Legal Training Institute acting director Pauline Mogish urged students to make the most of the week with the barristers.
Mogish told the students that the course was a crucial part of their learning before they were admitted as lawyers early next year.
The training course aimed to equip trainee lawyers with hands-on advocacy and litigation skills through practical training sessions.
The practical sessions included moot court situations.
The course would refine the students’ skills, especially in opening cases, obtaining evidence, non-leading questions, cross-examination, closing submissions and presenting pleas.
The Victorian Bar team is holding mentoring programmes for women in all aspects of advocacy and ethics.
