A LAWYER accused of assaulting his mother-in-law appeared in the Waigani Committal Court for mention yesterday.

Philemon Wass Korowi, of Korowi Lawyers, was charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.

He was released on a K1,000 bail to reappear in court on May 5.

Police allege that Korowi assaulted his mother in-law Lero Kobol on Dec 31 last year at June Valley in the National Capital District.

Korowi, 45, from Kamuka village, in Mulbier, Western Highlands, was arrested and charged by police last Friday.

Magistrate Pinnison Pindipia told Korowi that the role of the Committal Court was to only screen evidence and not to establish if a person was guilty or innocent.

Pindipia said the case would be referred to the National Court if there was sufficient evidence.

Pindipia explained to Korowi that police were given three months to complete investigations into an alleged incident.

The two bail guarantors each paid K500 to ensure that Korowi complied with bail conditions.
