Law students at the University of PNG have been urged to uphold nobility and maintain professionalism in the legal profession.
Speaking at the UPNG Law Students Society’s 29th Sir Buri Kidu Moot Court and end-of-year closing ceremony, lawyer Tony Noki told the students to take back the integrity of the legal profession.
“Take back the respect that the legal profession originally had,” he said.
Noki, a lawyer at Jema Lawyers, told law students to quit or cut down on the chewing of betel nuts, smoking and drinking.
Jema Lawyers, along with Dentons PNG, Kumul Petroleum Holdings Ltd, Kanda International Insurance Brokers and Bank South Pacific (BSP) were the main sponsors of the moot court.
The winning team of the moot competition was Sampa Paratus II, with the runner-up being the Statesmen.
Guguna Garo, a lawyer from Dentons PNG, told students to see the moot competition as a platform for better practice in the future.
“The moot court is the start for you to get that noble profession you are aiming for,” he said.
Legal Training Institute director Pauline Mogish highlighted the need to have skilful barristers and advocates to increase the level of practice.
Mogish gave out the five “Ps” of good legal practice as “proper preparation prevents poor performance”.
She said the moot court prepared students for better performance when they attended the LTI and when they started practice.
