LAWYERS in the Department of Justice and Attorney-General have been encouraged to perform to their level best in their careers following an intensive legal training last week.
Forty lawyers from the offices of state solicitor and solicitor-general were trained on legal advice writing, presentation of legal materials, contract drafting, commercial law advising and practical drafting of pleadings and affidavits.
They graduated last Friday.
The training continues the legal education of PNG lawyers which began in 2009 under the ‘Strongim government programme’ of the PNG-Australia Law and Justice programme.
It was facilitated by three legal trainers from the Australian government solicitor and Leo Cussen Centre for Law in Melbourne, Australia. They volunteered to prepare training materials for the workshop.
The training continues the work of Australian aid advisers who work on daily basis with lawyers in the department to strengthen individual legal skills. They also work with the PNG government to identify the best practice for the department.
The programme was introduced in 2009 to improve development opportunities for State lawyers to get advanced training in legal practice.
The training also recognised outstanding participants by awarding them the Jack Pambel Memorial prize.
Ruth Gelu from the office of solicitor-general and Blanche Vaitata from the office of state solicitor were recognised as the outstanding participants during the training.
