LEADING Victorian barristers and judges conducted a mentoring programme in Port Moresby to help local women lawyers.

They were in Port Moresby over the weekend for a joint initiative with the Legal Training Institute (LTI) to help develop women who were entering the profession.

The “Empowering Women in the Law in PNG” programme over Saturday and Sunday focused on building confidence and empowering legal trainees.

The mentoring programme was developed in partnership with the Victorian Bar based on its long-standing commitment to supporting the development of the legal profession in the region.

“The Victorian Bar has a long and proud tradition of supporting the development of advocacy skills in the Asia-Pacific region,” Victorian Bar president Jim Peters said. The two-day programme was the first stage in matching willing participants with the Victorian Bar law professionals and the judiciary.

The mentoring programme will guide newly admitted women navigate their way through their careers.

“This programme supports the professional development of our colleagues in the profession in developing their skills and understanding of legal ethics, leadership, advocacy styles and the importance of tackling the issues of discrimination and harassment in the workplace,’’Peters said.

“The Victorian Bar is proud to be a part of this programme and the ongoing partnership with the PNG Legal Training Institute and the Australian aid programme which has made it possible to conduct such programmes,” Peters said.
