The National – Friday, February 18, 2011

THE Capital Regional Amateur Boxing Association (CRABA) will hold a lead-up tournament on Sunday at the Sports Inn.

The newly registered association is affiliated to the PNG Amateur Boxing Union.

The competition is in preparation for April’s national selection trials in Port Moresby on the Easter long weekend.

CRABA vice-president Kevin Baki said more than 16 clubs were expected to participate with fighters competing from 46kg to 75kg categories, along with a woman’s division.

The 16 clubs expected at the event are Joyce Bay, Kasa Cowboys, Hohola Youth Boxing Club, Morata, 5-Mile Hilltop, 6-Mile Gimabo, JBS, Tubusereia, Gerehu, Vadavada, Ranu Guri, Tatana, BX Kido, Wildlife, Defence and Air Transport Squadron.

The official weigh-in will be at 7 o’clock in the morning.

Baki is also inviting interested business houses to come and witness the competition with the aim of sponsoring future tournaments.

Meanwhile, Baki on behalf of CRABA expressed his gratitude to Hohola Youth Boxing Club president Nick Calibud for stepping in to cover the funeral expenses of the late Dominic Bauwai.

He said the Port Moresby Amateur Boxing Association executive, who died last year, was at the forefront of pushing for more transparency and accountability in the national body.
