Leader backs Wingti’s call for a safer, cleaner Hagen
The National, Monday 16th April 2012
A CLAN leader has supported a call by former Western Highlands governor Paias Wingti for a major overhaul of Mt Hagen city to make it cleaner and safer.
Wingti, last week urged people in Mt Hagen to protect and maintain the city’s image.
He said if the city was well looked after, it would attract a lot of development.
Paul Peng, from the Yamka Puntimb clan living near the city, said the provincial government, MP William Duma and the city authority should restore the city’s image and fix the law and order problem.
Visitors to the city would immediately notice the piles of rubbish in almost every street corner and pot-holes on city roads.
Duma recently gave a K10 million to upgrade and seal the roads.
City residents and visitors are often harassed by thugs and pick-pockets.
Peng said Mt Hagen used to be one of best places to visit and do business.
“This is where the people are going to benefit. If we have the place that is clean with zero law and order problem, I think it will change the city,” Peng said.
