Leader unhappy with results

MENDI-Munihu MP Michael Nali has criticised Southern Highlands education officials for failing in their duties after a low number of grade 12 students were selected to tertiary institutions for the 2021 academic year.
Nali told provincial assembly members on Tuesday that as a leader and a parent, he was disappointed that the province had not been able to produce better results from its secondary school graduates.
“The drop in the education standard in the province is something we did not want and the 12 years of a student education seems like a waste,” he said.
“It broke the hearts of parents.
“This is a crime committed, you (officials) have failed and the end result is you have indirectly forced the dropouts to be on the streets.
“We are parents, and there is nothing more important in our life then our children.
“We all have desires for our children to excel in education and become someone.”
Nali said the province’s education system needed to be overhauled in order to get better results.
Governor William Powi expressed similar sentiments.
He said his government gave priority to the sector and the results were unacceptable.
He said last year the provincial government allocated K9 million for education.
Powi urged the administrator and adviser to find out why the standard had dropped significantly.
“The standard is measured by the curriculum, regular inspections, learning materials and the recruitment of qualified teachers, but there is a loophole somewhere,” he said.
