A WOMEN’S leader in East New Britain is urging women and girls in the province to try to help develop rural communities.

ENB Women and Youth in Agriculture Cooperative Society chairperson Lanieth Aua addressed the Women’s Leadership Symposium organised by the Pacific Partnership Programme in Kokopo last Thursday and said: “I challenge our women and girls in the urban and rural areas – where the majority of the women are – to take the responsibility of becoming transformational leaders in our communities, work place and ultimately at the national level to have an exponentially positive effect on the development of our province, region and young nation,” she said.

Aua said it was vital for women to continuously remind themselves that despite the challenges they faced daily, they should work together in empowering each other to make a difference in their families and in their communities.

“It is essential that women continue to emerge as leaders to contribute in eradicating poverty, promoting health and sustainable development, recognising human rights and godly rights and achieving international peace and security,”  she said.

Aua said the main problem with women in Papua New Guinea was the lack of empowerment.

She said many women in the country were yet to be empowered through programmes that could inspire them to accept the challenge of leadership.
