THE Electoral Commission and National Executive Council have been urged to reintroduce the former system where councillors elected their presidents in the local level government.

Youth leader Jerry Kang, from the Hagen urban local level government, said yesterday that this would prevent problems encountered in Western Highlands and other Highlands provinces.

“In the past, we didn’t see such problems in the council election, the people just cast their votes and go away while elected councillors lobby around and appoint their president,” he said.

Kang said in this election, the supporters of ward councillors and presidents “pulled strings” at the polling booths that resulted in many polling areas getting disrupted and  ballot papers and boxes getting destroyed.
