TWO village councillors were among seven suspects who have been detained by Wewak police in connection with the killing of a PMV driver along the Sepik Highway last Saturday.
Police said the seven suspects were allegedly under the influence of liquor and were disturbing traffic along the highway when the PMV passed through at Haniak village, Kubalia.
The driver stopped to question them after he narrowly avoided hitting them.
The driver was attacked and hit hard on the head with a piece of timber.
Acting provincial police commander Insp Charles Parinjo said the driver fell to the ground and was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The deceased had been identified by police as Patrick Pafugia of Soli village, Yangoru, East Sepik province.
The suspects are behind bars as investigations continue.
Insp Parinjo is pleased that aggrieved relatives have not disrupted traffic along the highway in retaliation.
