Leaders handover to police suspects in station’s ransacking

EIGHT men who allegedly destroyed a police station in Jiwaka have been handed over to police by tribal leaders.
Jiwaka police commander Supt Gideon Kauke told The National that the leaders of the Kumuka Ngants Kapangkup tribe brought in the suspects on Saturday for the alleged destruction of Banz Police Station.
Supt Kauke said the eight had been charged for wilful damage, assault causing actual grievous bodily harm and stealing.
Because there was not enough space in the cell at the station, seven of the suspects were granted bail after paying K500 each.
Those who had committed serious crimes such as murder are occupying the cell.
Police had told the tribal leaders to return all properties of police officers taken from their homes during the incident.
Kauke said family members of the police officers who had been traumatised during the incident would be compensated by the tribe.
Kauke said he met the 15 leaders of the tribe and asked them to bring the suspects.
