Leaders urged not to give handouts

KAINANTU MP and Mining Minister Johnson Tuke says some leaders who are dishing money to the two groups of people in the district are creating more trouble in society.
“Such leaders are fuelling the fire,” he said.
“If you are an aspiring politician, I am urging you not to give cash for support.
“I am not stopping you from your kind gesture to bring peace to communities, you can give material things.
“But if you are giving out money, you are asking the people to kill one another.
“You are supporting them to buy firearms and ammunition to fight and kill.
“I am aware of someone who is doing that.
“You are not adding value to what is happening on the ground.”
Tuke was responding to reports of the 19 people killed following two days of intense fighting between Tapo and Agarabi clans in Eastern Highlands last week.
“I was in the district at the weekend to ensure justice and peace for both warring tribes,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tuke said the clash was a result of a previous disagreement between the two tribes.
“We will negotiate for a cease fire which would eventually lead to a peace agreement,” he said.
