Leaders urged to address issues

Letters

HAVE leaders from the Southern Island groups of Wewak Island LLG have notice foreign-influenced style and criminal attitude invading our society?
Our society is so caring, peace loving and always maintains respect – friends to all and enemy to none.
Our virtues are built upon customary standards.
We are peace-loving people.
But I am concerned about the escalating law and order problems.
Youths are taking control of everything and it seems there is no command and control from community leaders, including mandated ward councillors.
Leaders need to wake up and address this issue.
Don’t not sit and wait before it spirals out of hand.
Start prosecuting law breakers and work with law enforcement to strengthen village court systems.
Crimes occurring in major towns and cities are now happening right at the village level.
Youths are carrying offensive weapons in public and assaulting innocent people.
Homebrew and marijuana are consumed right in front of local leaders and nothing happens.
There seems to be no concern at all.
Leaders are over powered by these ruthless youths. Crimes such as rape, attempted murder, breaking and entering, to name a few, are on the rise now.
School properties are also being destroyed. All these happening in broad daylight and right under the nose of our leaders.
Biem, Ruprup, Wei, Koil and Vokeo islands are also experiencing a rise on criminal activities.
Please wake up leaders and hold these culprits accountable and bring them to police.

Hanam Bill Sandu,
Concern Islander
