Leaders urged to help curb crime

MOROBE police commander Supt Peter Guinness has urged leaders in Mumeng to help curb lawlessness in their area.
Guinness said it was the leaders’ responsibility to ensure safe communities and that people need to change their mindset so they could uphold the law at all times.
He said Bulolo district stood out in terms of lawlessness.
“Bulolo has been under the spotlight with law and order but it is not the only district in Morobe where police will spend most of their time addressing law and order issues.
“There are other districts that need similar police assistance and we have to be equal in doing our policing roles,” he said.
He said this in relation to the ethnic clash between the Patep and Parakris villagers near Zenang in the Mumeng LLG area. They had been fighting over land.
The Patep villagers raided Parakris villages and killed two people and destroyed properties worth thousands of kina.
Government services like water supply and electricity to Parakris were also disconnected.
Guinness said he had assigned a police mobile squad unit to monitor the situation and detectives were sent in to investigate the incident.
