THE Taiwan Trade Mission is now accepting applications for the 2014 Pacific Islands Leadership Programme Fellowship.

It said in a statement that three Papua New Guineans spent three months in the United States and Taiwan last year.

Mission representative Daniel Hu said the objective of the fellowship was to empower 125 young leaders from Pacific islands countries “to exercise leadership and promote cooperation in a variety of cultural, geographical and institutional environments”.

“This programme seeks to attract candidates possessing outstanding intellectual promise, high leadership potential, and commitment to serve the development needs of their countries,” he said.

“It is intended to strengthen participants’ knowledge and understanding of key economic, social, political, health, educational and environmental issues affecting the region, and enable them to cultivate the leadership skills, approaches and networks to make meaningful contributions to the Pacific region throughout their careers.”

The leadership programme starts in August and ends in November this year.

Successful applicants will spend two months learning at the East-West Centre’s campus in Hawaii.

They then go for a month of field study at the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs.

Those eligible to apply include career professionals between 25 and 38 from government, business, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), health, media, agriculture and education.
