Leahy condemns school fights

LAE Mayor Koim Trilu Leahy has called for tougher actions to be taken against students involved in school fights.
This follows fights last Thursday and Friday in Lae in which a student was seriously injured and admitted at the Angau Memorial Hospital.
The fights were between students of Bugandi and Lae Secondary school.
Leahy said it was frustrating to see students who were supposed to be in the classroom learning, armed and attacking each other in public.
“I’m sick and tired of such behaviour being displayed by students,” Leahy said.
“I condemn this school fighting in the strongest sense. I think it’s time serious action be taken against those students involved in school fights.
“The ring-leaders must be identified and handed over to police for prosecution.
“Fighting, injuring and causing damage to properties are criminal offences. So police must arrest those students. In that way they will learn their lessons and stop this nonsense of school fights.”
Leahy said businesses, public transport owners and the general public had raised concerns about school fights between the two schools and he wanted this matter to be settled as soon as possible.
Leahy said school fights in public places could pave the way for other crimes like bag-snatching,
pick-pocketing, robbery and assault.
