PEOPLE living along the proposed Kookaburra flyover in Port Moresby have been advised to vacate the area to allow for construction work to proceed.

“We are negotiating for alternative relocation sites in the city and a reasonable package to compensate them,” acting city manager Leslie Alu said.

“This will allow road works to go ahead in time for the 2015 South Pacific Games and later the 2018 APEC meeting.

“The flyover will be an important road link to Jackson International Airport, Sir John Guise Stadium and the Pacific Games Village,” he said.

Governor Powes Parkop said residents along the proposed flyover were unnecessarily demanding compensation that was “extremely high” and unreasonable. “The city of Port Moresby is expanding and unnecessary compensation claims of millions of kina will slow down work and will definitely affect the 2015 South Pacific Games and other important developments taking place around the city,” he said.

Parkop appealed to people living along the proposed road corridor to accept what the National Capital District Commission was offering in compensation.

He said many of the people living there had accepted what the NCDC was offering.

Alu said the Gordon industrial area road maintenance and upgrading was 50% completed. Work is expected to be completed around August.
