REINSTATED National Planning and Monitoring Secretary Joseph Lelang was arrested and charged when he reported to the Boroko Police Station yesterday for questioning.
Lelang is charged with one count of break and enter and faces possible theft charges, NCD metropolitan commander Supt Joseph Tondop said.
Lelang was questioned at the station following a formal complaint lodged against him soon after he was reinstated.
The charge stems from an after-hours office visit he made after learning of his reinstatement.
The acting secretary, Ruby Zarriga, had been away on an official trip to Australia at the time.
The National Court had ordered Lelang be reinstated as planning secretary on May 18.
He had been suspended for official misconduct in office on Feb 10.
Tondop said Lelang’s actions in accessing Zarriga’s office at Vulupindi Haus between 6.45pm and 7.45pm on the day he was reinstated were questionable.
“He could have waited until the next day,” he said.
Tondop said the official hours of operation were from 7.45am to 4.06pm.
He said Lelang had apparently engaged a locksmith to tamper with the office locks to gain access to the place.
He is expected to appear in court today.
