SHADOW finance minister Joseph Lelang wants the government to explain how the K513 million budget deficit came about.
Lelang, the Kandrian-Gloucester MP, raised the issue in parliament yesterday in the wake of comments by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill that the economy was performing well.
“It is interesting to learn from the prime minister’s statement on Tuesday, and now supported by the Treasury Minister Don Polye, that the country’s economy is doing very well.
“But I want you to explain the budget deficit of K513 million that we are now faced with,” he said.
He told Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion, who told parliament of plans to strategise the public service for efficient delivery of services, that it would not be workable because there “is too much politics involved”.
He said he would not be surprised if the country faced a major decline in economic activities and a rise in inflation.
