Let’s respect the old and wise
The National, Wednesday July 11th, 2012
I WAS taught to respect my elders when I was young.
My parents felt it was important for me to show respect.
I realise that our society is more casual today and I enjoy that.
The only problem with this, however, is that honour and respect will decline.
When I was young, I had the privilege to meet Sir Michael Somare and Sir Julius Chan.
I can still remember that special moment of my life.
During the short time I spent with them, my appreciation for them grew.
And to this day, I still have great admiration and respect for them.
As parents, we can help our children to learn how
to love older people, appreciate their wisdom and to feel the blessing of giving to others.
Given my early experiences with the two former prime ministers, it is evident that showing respect for the elders, treating them well, and appreciating their contributions has its own rewards.
We can learn from them and their experiences, and enrich our own life.
May God help change the mindset of the young generation.
