Let’s get it right on Buk Bilong Pikinini

Letters

I WISH to correct your report in The National last Thursday on page 12 titled “Buk Bilong Pikinini School in Lae graduates its first batch of students”.
The report implies that Buk Bilong Pikinini operates out of Unitech and this is its first year of operation, graduating 61 pupils.
For the record, in Lae, Buk Bilong Pikinini Library (as it is formally known) was first established at Unitech Taraka campus in 2014 and sponsored by Bank South Pacific.
The BBP Lae chapter now has two establishments or libraries, one at Unitech campus and another at the Lae Show Grounds.
The writer obviously attended the ceremonies at the Lae Show Grounds and quoted the guest speakers there.
At Unitech Library, that was its fifth graduation with 68 passing out (and first graduation for Lae Show Ground Library, with 61 graduating).
So in Lae, Buk Bilong Pikinini is already five years old.
Buk Bilong Pikinini Libraries has 17 establishments or libraries in PNG as of January this year.
In 2018, Buk Bilong Pikinini Unitech came first as the top library in PNG as assessed in October 2018.
So well done to its teachers.
Buk Bilong Pikinini schools are free. They do not charge fees or ask for project fees. However, a Buk Bilong Pikinini Library can be sponsored by private or corporate houses.
Buk Bilong Pikinini Unitech Library has been sponsored by BSP since 2014. Lae Show Ground Library was sponsored this year by Steamships The Buk Bilong Pikinini Library concept was created mainly to take in children from poor and disadvantage homes.
This concept is aimed at making reading and writing universal in PNG.
