LETTERS IN BRIEF

Overdue allowances:
More government properties will be damaged because the Government has not paid our overdue allowances. Like national MPs we are also mandated leaders, so why are we being ignored and neglected? The Prime Minister promised to allocate funds to the Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs to pay our allowances, but this has not happened. However, when security forces made some noises the Government immediately bent backwards and gave in to their demands. What about the ward councilors? When are we going to get our allowances paid?

Frustrated ward councilors, Lae

Climate change:
US President Donald Trump is not only denying that climate change is man-made but he is now also carelessly joking and clowning about it on Twitter. He doesn’t seem to care that small Pacific Islands nations might be inundated and destroyed by rising sea levels. I call upon all consumers in Oceania, Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe to from now on boycott all US products, such as smartphones, cars and foodstuff until President Trump reverses his decision to leave the Paris Accord on Climate Change.

Taskforce violence:
The Apec management team should take some blame for the storming of Parliament House by protesting members of the Apec security taskforce. This problem would not have occurred and Parliament House would not have been damaged if the security task force members had been paid their allowances on time. The authorities should look into the protest and violence because someone would have been egging them on from the back.

Chemistry teacher:
As a grade 12 student of Hoskins Secondary School, in West New Britain, I wish to raise my concerns about the teachers. This year we have been having difficulties with our science teachers, especially in chemistry. Often when the teacher attends class he struggles to teach the topic of the day. This year, we did not cover much of the last unit of grade 12 chemistry. The Department of Education should ensure that teachers are qualified, well versed with the subject and able to teach. Our future as students is at stake

Sad event:
I write to express my sadness with the damage done to Parliament House by protesting security officers on Tuesday. A full investigation should be held and those involved punished. The police minister should not stop the investigation and termination of those involved. If you let them go free, they will do it again. Pay them what they are due and sack them. They have no respect for the uniform and no respect for the sanctity of the House. How do they expect the allowances to be processed soon after the Apec Summit?
