School fee loans:
The prime minister said at the start of last year that university students would be given school fee loans. It would be on the condition that the debts would be paid up when the student started working. The idea was suggested by Wabag MP Dr Tom Lino in Parliament and O’Neill agreed and promised it would start this year, but it seems like it is forgotten. It was also mentioned that certain amounts of money were allocated for the school fees loan plan.

Suspend PEB :
While I commend the education minister in suspending some secondary principals for failing to comply with the TFF policy, I further urge the Education Department to suspend the Western Highlands PEB for incompetency. Their lack of understanding and ensuring proper and effective teacher appointment has affected a lot of schools and denied the rights of many students to education in the province. The WHP education board lacks commonsense to work with key stakeholders, especially church agencies.

Mining waste:
It’s interesting to note that the ‘National Fisheries Authority wants signing of consent fast tracked’ with landowners at Wagang for the planned fisheries wharf, a second one for Lae. It’s a paradox that Wafi-Golpu mine is also proposing to release their mining waste into the sea 200-metres off the coast of Wagang for the life of the mine. Is the Government agency responsible for marine resources serious about fishing and the fisheries wharf development as a long-term sustainable development?
