PAPUA New Guinea Lewas assistant coach Mahuru Dai has noted an improvement from his squad with the team set to leave on Saturday for the 50-over Women’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe.
He told The National that the squad had worked hard at training with emphasis on developing and learning new skills.
“We have made it a mission to learn from every trial and training session,” Dai said.
“You can see that the communication and determination to work is there.
“It’s all about developing their skills and it’s the small things that they work hard on to get, and that shows a lot about the character of the team.
“They’ve been really busy with their preparations and commitment to training, and the trial matches has been commendable.”
Dai said the 50-over version had not been played for some time, with the Lewas determined to improve in the longer format.
“The 50-over format is a style of the game that our women haven’t been able to play for some time, but it’s really encouraging seeing them get out and compete in the version,” he said. “We had four 50-over matches against the Under-19 national men’s team.
“Our women managed to win two of them.
“It has been a challenging time for the team with all their international matches last year cancelled due to the Coronavirus.
“But they’ve picked up in training and warm matches in the last two months.”
